Murals

Century-old seccos and contemporary masterpieces. Murals that have stood the test of time. From monastery walls to modern buildings. We dedicate ourselves to them. We unravel their stories. We dive deep into their history, until we fully understand their essence and know how to preserve them.

Interdisciplinary approach

Over the years, SRAL has restored many murals in monumental buildings, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. They are made in various materials and techniques on different supports. Analysis of the context, historical colour research, and decision-making models play essential roles in the treatment of murals. These tools are invaluable and extremely useful, especially due to the often complex history and conservation issues associated with murals.

Knowledge and experience

The treatment of vault and wall paintings requires a wide range of knowledge and experience, including knowledge of the materials and techniques used, the (art) historical development of the genre, decay of plaster and paint layers, salt problems, restoration materials and building physics and environmental aspects that influence decay. It is also important to understand the history and significance of the context of the paintings, so that informed choices can be made regarding the relationship of the paintings with the rest of the interior.

Everything under one roof

Over the past 35 years, knowledge, materials, and research methodologies have evolved tremendously. This has created a growing need for specialized expertise, which is now unlikely to be found in a single conservator. Constant advancements have enabled SRAL to adapt to the increasing complexity of mural restoration work. With a large team of diverse specialists, we excel at solving complex conservation issues on murals.
