Looking Back at #BFF Kids Edition

Last Friday, the #BFF Kids Edition took place at the Bonnefanten. It was a well-attended and inspiring event where children were playfully introduced to the museum, art, and the fascinating profession of art conservation.

Introduction to art conservation

Our conservators were present in the conservation studio on the first floor of the museum to welcome visitors and explain what being a conservator entails. Conservators are passionate about art and history, enjoy hands-on work, and conduct in-depth research. They repair damaged paintings and other artworks, ensuring they are preserved for future generations. It is a precise and patient profession that relies on specialized techniques and tools.

Conservators-in-the-Making at work!

After the introduction, the children got to work as conservators-in-training! Using coloured pencils, they carefully filled in missing pieces of a painting—a copy of the 15th-century Dual Justice Panel by Jan van Brussel, from the Bonnefanten's collection. The children were focused, asked thoughtful questions, and showed great curiosity about the process. The results were impressive: the young participants did a fantastic job!

At SRAL, we believe it is important to introduce children to conservation at an early age. This not only helps them appreciate the importance of heritage conservation but also fosters creativity, precision, and a love of art and science.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this edition of #BFF. We look forward to inspiring more young art enthusiasts at future events!
