Valuable treasures

The reason for deciding on a restoration is that the object is something special. It may be valuable as a museum piece, part of a church or palace interior, a key work in an artist’s oeuvre, or a cherished personal possession. An object comes to us, for example, when it has suffered damage, has missing parts, discoloration, or aging. However, restoration is about more than just repairing the material.

Decision-making

Restoration work revolves around a careful process of research and decision-making. For traditional paintings, the approach is straightforward: cleaning, retouching, and varnishing. For historic buildings with layered murals, reconstructing their history is essential. Modern art presents different challenges, such as material limitations and the artist’s intent. Sometimes, decisions only become clear during the process.

The journey is diverse and dynamic. Consultations with owners are intensive, and decision-making is meticulous. Logistical challenges and project planning require coordination with various stakeholders. Execution takes place partly on-site and partly in the SRAL studios, where every detail is carefully carried out.
