PoCo Site Visit: Museum Catharijneconvent Utrecht

On May 22, 2025, the site visit took place at the Museum Catharijneconvent.
After an interesting introduction to the collection, polychrome sculptures were viewed by the PoCo team, led by Aleth Lorne. Six sculptures were discussed in detail, and one sculpture, the enthroned Sibille, was further examined with a digital microscope.

The day began with an introduction by René de Kam, who spoke about the medieval history of Utrecht and the context and origins of the medieval collection. After this interesting introduction, the participants viewed polychrome sculptures in the museum. The focus of the day was on Northern Dutch sculpture. Aleth Lorne spoke about the understudied polychromy of the Northern Netherlands, the development of composition, the influence of light on a sculpture, issues in restoration, and ethical aspects.

Afterwards, sculptures in the depot were viewed. One sculpture, the enthroned Sibille, was examined with a digital microscope, while the other sculptures were discussed with the group. The team will draw up reports on these sculptures, which may be helpful in making decisions about conservation measures and/or any restoration work that may be required.
