Architectural finishes research Tegelen

In December 2025, colour historical research was conducted on the façade of Grotestraat 46 in Tegelen. The Hendrick de Keyser Association is the owner of the building. The Municipality of Venlo requested research to support the restoration of this building, which is a defining feature of the streetscape.
The purpose of colour historical research is to obtain information about the finish and colour scheme of the original paintwork. This research was also intended to provide advice on the possible restoration of historical colours and paint types, for a historically accurate restoration.

The situation during the investigation and prior to renovation.

Research method

In this case, a combination of two types of research is chosen, which means that the information is compared in situ with the results of microscopic analysis of several paint samples. First, the top layers of paint are carefully scraped away at predetermined locations using a scalpel blade to expose earlier, original layers of paint. This results in so-called colour steps or stratigraphies. The paint layer structure is determined and the colour of the original finish is determined using an NCS colour fan.

The original colours are determined using a colour scale or stratigraphy.

In addition, paint samples were taken from all paint layers and the substrate at several locations for microscopic analysis. The sample material was prepared into paint cross-sections and studied using a research microscope. This research into the composition and differences or similarities between the paint samples was carried out in the laboratory of our studio in Maastricht.

In a paint cross-section, you can see the structure of paint layers under the microscope.

In addition to the stratigraphy and paint samples, historical source material such as old photographs from different periods is also examined. The aim is to reconstruct as accurately as possible the various finishing phases that the building has undergone.

Results

The research and all findings are documented in a report. This report provides an overview of the colours of various locations on the building, e.g. the shop front, window frames, dormer window and gutter moulding, organised by phase or period. It also includes recommendations on which new colours to use for the renovation.
