Looking back and forward

December 2023

Dear friends of SRAL, dear colleagues, associates and cooperation partners,

As we approach the end of 2023, we would like to take a moment to look back on this special year with you. A year in which we again worked diligently to preserve and restore beautiful works of art and monumental interiors. We are able to do this thanks to your support, cooperation and confidence in our work.

In 2023, we committed to strengthening interdisciplinarity within our own team of 12 specialised conservators. Through intensive knowledge exchange between disciplines at SRAL, we are ready to embark on the integral conservation of several large ensembles from 2024.

In this newsletter you will find some highlights of the past year - with film and TV reports about us and our work in Soest, in The Hague and Maastricht.

Beautiful public presentations are also on the agenda again in 2024, on religious art, on finishing layers in historical interiors and on sculpture. We hope to be able to invite you again. We look forward to seeing you in the new year, when we will again be ready with the expertise and dedication you have come to expect from us.

On behalf of the entire SRAL team, we would like to wish you and your loved ones happy holidays. May the new year bring health, happiness and prosperity.

Kind regards,

Lydia Beerkens and Frans Jeurissen

In the spotlight: Double appearance on NPO!

October was a special month for us as we were featured not once, but twice on the national broadcaster. Don't miss the broadcasts and watch them on NPO Start!

"Zin in Morgen" - Season 2, Episode 24 - Saturday 14 October

In this episode, our sculpture conservators Ausrine Dambrauskaite and Arnold Truyen were interviewed about their collaboration. Ausrine joined SRAL in 2022 and has since worked closely with Arnold to share and embed knowledge. The full interview is available on NPO Start.

"De Kunst van het Binnenhof" - Episode 4 - 7 October 2023

An engaging programme with Splinter Chabot focusing on the art treasures of the Binnenhof. In this episode, Lydia Beerkens (SRAL director and modern art conservator) shares her knowledge on how the condition of the imposing modern paintings in the Tweede Kamer is determined. Interesting background information on how our team works and an in-depth understanding of the conservation of these valuable pieces.

Review of the Restoration of
The Battle of Quatre-Bras at the NMM

We take you on a journey back to a special restoration project that took place at the National Military Museum (NMM) in Soest early this year. It concerns the impressive painting that captures the epic Battle of Quatre-Bras, a historical moment that played a crucial role in military history.

To share this special project with you, the NMM has posted some fascinating videos on their official YouTube channel. These videos not only comprehensively highlight the painting itself, but also highlight the large-scale restoration.
