From the early middle ages to the present
An experienced team of painting restorers is specialised in different aspects of Western paintings. Paintings dating from the early middle ages up to the present are treated in our studios. Detailed preliminary examination, the assessment of the object's condition and complex structural and aesthetic problems are an integral part of our approach.
Latest techniques
SRAL has developed new and improved techniques, ranging from the removal of varnish and overpaint from painted surfaces to the complex structural treatments of canvas paintings. SRAL regularly publishes articles in an international context.
From small to large scale format canvas paintings
The workshop for paintings on canvas is also specialised in large format paintings, originating from monumental ensembles, and particularly in alternative and reversible lining methods.
Treatment of panel paintings
The workshop for paintings on panel is equipped with apparatus for the structural treatment of panel paintings, such as glueing loose planks, releasing rigid cradles and attaching less invasive supporting systems. Particular problems relating to wooden supports are regularly analysed in consultation with foreign specialists. SRAL is part of the Panel Painting Initiative of the Getty Conservation Institute.
