'IAN' the sculptor from Maastricht

Discover Maastricht’s fascinating past during the walk "The Maastricht of Jan van Steffeswert." This unique route starts at the Bonnefanten Museum and ends in the heart of the city.

Jan van Steffeswert, a master sculptor from the late Middle Ages, left his mark on cities such as Aachen, Liège, Brussels, and even New York. The largest collection of his work, including the impressive polychrome crucifix from 1500, can be admired at the Bonnefanten Museum. This masterpiece was carefully restored in 2021.

During the walk, an expert from Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) will guide you through the places where Jan van Steffeswert lived and worked. Discover where he found his inspiration, who his patrons were, and how he sourced his materials. This captivating tour offers deep insight into the life and work of this remarkable artist.
