SRAL adds our voice to other cultural heritage communities and organisations expressing condemnation of the illegal invasion and occupation of the Ukrainian sovereign nation by the oppressor Russia. SRAL stands in solidarity with our European neighbours in Ukraine and Russian citizens protesting this war. We condemn the targeting of civilians and non-military targets. We call on Russia to cease operations within Ukraine and respect international law and human rights.
We encourage those in the cultural heritage sector to first think of their own safety before acting to safeguard artworks and buildings in their care. We advise all conservation professionals to use the online resources and tools that are available to preserve and maintain cultural heritage artefacts in times of crisis, including:
ICOM and UNESCO Museums Security and Disaster Preparedness in Running a Museum: Practice Handbook, ICCROM First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis – Toolkit
UNESCO and ICCROM Endangered heritage: emergency evacuation of heritage collections
