Paintings
As conservators, we go on a journey of discovery behind the picture. By understanding each painting's very own technique and use of materials, we gain all the necessary knowledge to give each work of art the attention it deserves.

From early medieval to contemporary
Our experienced team of painting conservators specializes in various aspects of Western painting traditions, treating artworks spanning from the early Middle Ages to the present. Central to our approach is extensive research, which involves assessing and documenting the condition of each piece, researching materials and techniques, and understanding the artwork's context and the decision-making process prior to treatment.
Restoration techniques
Always reasoning from the object, SRAL strives to develop and improve restoration methods, often in collaboration with national and international partners. In the past, for example, techniques were optimised for taking off aged non-original varnish layers and performing complex structural treatments of paintings on canvas. We also share our findings and developments in (inter)national publications and through workshops.

From small to large size
SRAL has experience in a wide range of projects, from small easel paintings to elaborate interiors. We are particularly experienced in handling large-format paintings in our studio. Working from a holistic approach, paintings are contextualised with their interiors and their history. This approach guides our conservation an restoration choices.
Panel paintings
The studio for panel paintings is equipped for the curative (structural) conservation of panels, such as gluing loose boards, unblocking parquets and applying new, often non-invasive support structures. Such treatments lead not only to a better preservation of the painting but often also to an improved esthetic appearance of the depiction.
