The Academic Plaster cast library Maastricht

In 2023, the Maastricht Institute of Arts celebrated its 200th anniversary and showcased a significant portion of its plaster cast collection at the Bonnefanten: the Maastricht Academic Plaster Cast Collection. Before the exhibition, the collection underwent restoration treatment at SRAL.

The rare collection, established with the founding of the Stadsteekenschool in 1823, now comprises approximately 500 pieces. About 40 of these plaster casts were treated in the SRAL conservation studio on the first floor of the Bonnefanten. These casts have been affected by mold, resulting in partial or complete yellowing, and in some areas, browning.

Research and effective treatment

To determine the most effective treatment method, SRAL restorers research the fungal structure and conduct various cleaning tests. The treatment process is conducted with protective measures, including face masks, disposable coveralls, goggles, and gloves.

Cotton swabs and specialized suction devices are used for cleaning. As a result, the sculptures are free from mold, and the discoloration is brought back to the original state as much as possible.
