Sculptures and polychrome objects
Several museums, churches and monasteries in the Netherlands have important collections of polychromed statues in stone and wood. SRAL has the practical expertise and research facilities to handle them professionally.
From churches to museums
A particular specialisation within SRAL is the research and restoration of polychrome sculptures and painted objects. This includes, for example, medieval statues, Baroque church interiors, neo-Gothic altars, but also painted objects from (natural) historical collections and ethnographic museums. Our expertise includes treatments such as fixing paint layers, retouching and structural treatment of statues.
Stratigraphic and topographical research
Successive paint layers have been preserved on many wooden statues. To map the original and later overpainting, stratigraphic and topographical research is carried out. Depending on the function (e.g. liturgical or museum) and condition of the artwork, treatment is carried out in consultation with the owner. Objects such as retables or funerary monuments composed of several materials can be treated in collaboration with other restoration disciplines.
