Senior paintings conservator

Full-time (40 hrs/week)

Position Summary:

SRAL is a multi-disciplinary institute for the conservation and restoration of polychromed sculpture, easel paintings, modern and contemporary art, murals and paintings within historic interiors, and further carries out research and provides advice, including in the field of Preventive Conservation. SRAL is also active in (inter)national academic education programmes for conservation, and the further training of colleagues abroad.

The conservator is primarily responsible for carrying out the correct preventative care, conservation and restoration of the object.
The conservator is up-to-date with developments in the field, promotes well-executed restorations, shares knowledge, and supervises interns and academic students.

The conservator sets the standard for quality, and evaluates this after delivery of the object thereby following the ethical code for restorers according to the European Confederation of Conservator- Restorers' Organizations (ECCO).

Responsibilities:

The senior paintings conservator is project-responsible within SRAL. Within the supporting organisation he/she is accountable for the progress of his/her project(s), and this responsibility can extend to multiple projects.

Task areas and activities:

  1. The preparation of treatment proposals and quotes for the conservation and restoration of art objects and the implementation of preventive care within the specific discipline/area of expertise.

  2. The application of contextually-oriented considerations in conservation and research projects.

  3. Entrepreneurship: implementing the effective and efficient utilisation of people and resources, contributing to acquisitions and undertaking initiatives to strengthen SRAL’s position.

  4. Communication: maintaining good relationships and clear agreements with clients to ensure fulfilled expectations, and stimulating multi-disciplinary cooperation and knowledge sharing between colleagues.

  5. Knowledge transfer: through contributions to the (inter)national academic education and training programmes.

Requested profile:

  • Training qualification in the conservation-restoration of paintings at university level Master or equivalent (for EU university training programmes see ENCoRE). For a training situation within the Netherlands successful completion of the Post Initial study at the University of Amsterdam is required.

  • Extensive work experience in treating easel paintings on canvas and panel.

  • You are able to take on the role of project manager: you can guide and manage a team of

    conservators. You deliver projects with excellent results within time and quality demands.

  • You have experience integrating training and work implementation.

  • You work in accordance with the ethics code for conservators; ECCO.

  • You have demonstrable skills in interpreting the results and analyses of third parties.

  • You are enthusiastic to expand and develop your expertise to work across various disciplines,

    in particular with regard to the overlap with modern and contemporary art and paintings

    within historical interiors.

  • You are accurate and eager to learn, you organize your work well, you think in terms of

    solutions and you can work both within a team and independently.

  • You have good communication skills, oral and written, both in Dutch and English, and you are

    able to publish in (inter)national professional journals.

  • A contact base and work experience within the Dutch museum and heritage field is

    considered an advantage.

    Employment conditions:

    Temporary position for 1 year. Contingent on suitability there exists the possibility for conversion to a permanent contract. The position is valued in salary scale 12: min. € 3,952.00 - max. € 5,504.00 gross per month (excl. Holiday allowance and year-end bonus).
